Homework Policy

Homework is an important component of the teaching-learning process that aims to serve the following purposes:

1. Allow students to regularly practise and apply skills and concepts taught

2. Foster independent learning skills and self-regulation

3. Reinforce and extend classroom learning through meaningful practice

4. Develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities

5. Encourage family engagement in the learning process

6. Prepare students for independent and lifelong learning in an increasingly digital and interconnected world

Homework refers to any learning activity that students are required by the school to complete outside of curriculum time. Common examples include:

• Practice Exercises

• Preparatory Homework

• Extension Assignments

Students play a crucial role in the homework process and are expected to demonstrate responsibility and commitment to their learning. The following outlines key student responsibilities:

Organisation and Time Management

• Record all homework assignments accurately in their Student Planner

• Plan and allocate appropriate time for homework completion 

Completion and Quality Standards

• Complete all assigned homework to the best of their ability

• Submit homework on time and in the required format

• Ensure work is neat, legible, and well-presented

 Seeking Help and Support

• Ask for clarification when instructions are unclear

• Seek help from teachers, parents, or peers when experiencing difficulties

 Academic Integrity

• Complete homework independently unless collaboration is specifically encouraged

• Acknowledge sources when conducting research or using external materials

• Avoid copying from peers or online sources

• Be honest about difficulties encountered and time spent on assignments

• Students are expected to demonstrate academic integrity in all homework and learning tasks. AI may be used to support learning, but should not replace students’ own thinking or effort, unless explicitly allowed by the teacher for a task.

• Where homework requires the use of technology or AI tools, teachers should clearly indicate this in students’ planners or task instructions, so that parents and guardians are aware and can provide appropriate supervision at home.

Attendance and Catch-up Responsibilities

• Obtain missed homework assignments when absent from school

• Take initiative to catch up on missed learning and assignments

Homework (and classwork) provides parents with timely information on the learning progress of their child and an opportunity to be involved in the child's learning.

• Homework will be recorded by our students in the Student Planner

• Students should inform the teacher if they are having difficulty with homework given

• If a student repeatedly fails to complete/submit their assigned homework, the teacher will contact the parent

• Ensure that your child (P4-P6) has completed the Basic Module on AI and AI-Enabled Features in SLS before using AI tools in SLS such as ALS or feedback tools in SLS.

• Engage your child in conversations about how AI is used for schoolwork. Homework is designed to reinforce and internalise learning; therefore, the use of AI is not advisable unless explicitly instructed by teachers.

• Guide and remind your child to use AI responsibly by avoiding over-reliance and exercising discernment in checking AI-generated outputs. 

• Parents and guardians are encouraged to supervise their child’s use of such tools at home and support responsible use.

• Select a well-lit, comfortable, and quiet spot in the home and make it a designated homework area

• Ensure that the necessary stationery is available

• Establish routine study hours and study habits

• Encourage your child to complete homework given on time
